Understanding Host - Multipathogen Systems : Modeling the Interaction Between Ecol ogy and Epidemiology

چکیده
We present a new mathematical framework for exploring the ecological and immunological interactions between multiple infectious diseases. The mechanism underlying the ecological interaction is the modulation of susceptible numbers for one pathogen as a result of quarantining or mortality following infection with a competitor. Immunological interactions are assumed to result from immunosuppression or crossimmunity to co-circulating pathogens, both during and after infection. This model is briefl y examined to explore the consequences of these factors for the coexistence of multiple infectious diseases. We show that strong competition among pathogens reduces the region of coexistence, while substantial immunosuppression acts to facilitate pathogen community per sis tence. The dynamics of this model in the presence of seasonal changes in contact rates are presented and compared with historical case notifi cation data for measles and whooping cough. We fi nish by highlighting how such a mathematical framework may be used to systematically investigate the role played by alternative competing mechanisms in shaping the observed dynamics of multipathogen systems.

Interactions among multiple infectious agents are increasingly recognized as a fundamental issue in the understanding of key questions in public health regarding pathogen emergence, maintenance, and evolution. متن کاملLatency Compensation in Multi Chaotic Systems Using the Extended OGY Control Method
The problem discussed in this paper is the effect of latency time on the OGY chaos control methodology in multi chaotic systems. The Smith predictor, rhythmic and memory strategies are embedded in the OGY chaos control method to encounter loop latency. A comparison study is provided and the advantages of the Smith predictor approach are clearly evident from the closed loop responses. The comple...

A recently published article describing the draft genome of Erwiniamallotivora BT-Mardi (1), the causal pathogen of papaya dieback infection in Peninsular Malaysia, hassignificant potential to overcome and reduce the effect of this vulnerable crop (2). The authors found that the draft genome sequenceis approximately 4824 kbp and the G+C content of the genomewas 52-54%, which is very similarto t...
متن کاملEffects of Pathogens on Terrestrial Ecosystem Function
Many studies have demonstrated that pathogens can have strong effects on the per for mance of individual organisms, population dynamics, and community interactions. A more limited set of studies suggests that pathogens can alter a wide range of ecosystem functions in terrestrial systems; however, we are lacking a framework to predict the type and magnitude of ecosystem effects that a given path...
